Called Roof Capping, Ridge Capping or even just Ridges - They are the curved tiles that protect the corners and top of the roof where two adjacent sides meet. Roof caps are cemented into place, which is called bedding. A coloured finish layer is then applied on top of the bedding. This process is called pointing. Cracks in the pointing and bedding of the roof capping often cause roof leaks or worse.
Ridge capping is a crucial component of roofing systems. It involves securing the ridge tiles along the roof’s peak. Let’s break it down:
Bedding Mortar:
The first layer, called bedding, uses mortar to hold the ridge capping in place and ensure proper alignment.
Bedding sets the ridge at the correct level on the roof.
Pointing Layer:
The second layer is pointing. It fills the gap between the bedding and the ridge cap and has a beautiful smooth finish. Pointing enhances the hold, adds protection against water and dirt, and contributes to the roof’s overall strength.
Repointing:
Repointing is the maintenance process where pointing is applied to existing cement work, usually once bad cracking has started to appear.
Flexible Pointing:
Traditionally, sand/cement mixtures were used for pointing.
Nowadays, more flexible compounds are preferred and are the Australian Standard. These allow the roof to expand and contract with temperature changes, reducing the risk of cracks and deterioration.
Maintenance Recommendations:
Regular repointing (usually every ten years) helps prevent mortar cracks and leaks. If your home or roof is a decade old or more, consider having it inspected and repointed to maintain its integrity.
Remember, a well-maintained ridge capping system ensures a durable and watertight roof.
At Able Roofing, we recommend the product Roof Bond to achieve an incredibly strong, flexible adhesion between the roof and ridge capping. Roof Bond is manufactured in Brisbane and has a guarantee that their products will not crack for up to 10 years.
As a business, we have over 25 years of roofing experience
A loose ridge cap can be the weak spot that a nasty storm may find and exploit. Once wind lifts one ridge cap, a domino effect can happen, and they all can come up. Even if they do not lift off, one loose ridge cap can become a water entry point and cause a lot of damage to your home.
At Able Roofing, we recommend regular maintenance and re-capping as a cost-effective way to be storm-safe and not have to worry about your roof’s performance for up to 10 years.
We provide excellent products and services to fit any budget.
